Editors Rock and Ice tested Multitraction: the results are great! Supportive and reasonably stiff, these medium-with, medium-volume boots were great to climb in and didn not compromise comfort on long approaches. The nimble feel stems from an asymmetrical climbing-shoe last that allows the big toe, the fundation of balance and precise foot placement, to drive each step. The 2.6 - to 2.8 millimeter Nubuk leather uppers hugged our feet securely on rocky trails, and the gently rockered Vibram Kommando lugs gripped hard-pack snow and slippery rocks with aplomb.
The Multitraction features a fiberglass shank that is just the right rigidity to use wigh hybrid crampons on pitches up to about 70 degrees. A low profile stickly rand, combined with a slim, clean, toe were great for climbing cracks. The boots breathes fairly well, thanks to Kaylands own waterproof/breathable liner material, called Proof.
Open-cell foam insulation kept one of our editors dogs warm on a long zero-degree day in Colorado. Though they don not come cheap, the Kayland Multitractions are on outstanding blend of minimal weight and maximum performance.
