Der weiche Kohlenstoffstahl verformt sich in unebenen Rissen und gelangt dadurch leichter und tiefer in die Risse ohne dabei zuviel Sprengkraft zu entwickeln. Die Haken aus softerem Stahl eignen sich hervorragend für brüchigeres und spröderes Gestein wie z.B. Kalk.

Made from NiCrMo steel, the design of this piton allows the same deformation in both length and thickness. Especially suitable for deep cracks.

Most pitons rely on compression of the metal and leverage from directional pull for their holding power. The U shape of the shaft adds an additional holding force by creating spring tension when the piton is driven into a crack proportionately smaller than its width. The soft carbon steel can mold and press more easily into fissures without damaging the rock making soft pitons the right choice for brittle rock like limestone.
